Faith in the city

Few American cities take church this seriously

The Black church tradition is central to Atlanta's identity, and to the institutional history of the civil rights movement — the city's historically Black congregations, colleges and seminaries were the organising base for much of it. Alongside that, evangelical Protestants are the largest single group across the metro, with Southern Baptist and United Methodist heritage running strong through the surrounding Georgia suburbs and non-denominational churches growing quickly.

Atlanta also carries an unusual density of theological education for its size: the Interdenominational Theological Center in the Atlanta University Center, Candler School of Theology at Emory, Columbia Theological Seminary out in Decatur, and Mercer's McAfee School of Theology. And as a major immigrant gateway, the metro has thriving Korean congregations concentrated in Gwinnett County, Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox communities, and fast-growing Latino Catholic and Pentecostal churches.

Meeting up

Where a first meeting actually works

Atlanta is a green, hilly, heavily wooded city, and the BeltLine has quietly made it a much better place to meet somebody for the first time — a paved trail linking parks, markets and neighbourhoods, with plenty of easy places to peel off if it is not working out.

Easy places to say hello

  • BeltLine Eastside Trail — paved trail linking parks and neighbourhoods
  • Piedmont Park — large central park with lawns and skyline views
  • Ponce City Market — converted Sears building with a public food hall
  • Atlanta Botanical Garden — 30 acres adjoining Piedmont Park, ticketed
  • High Museum of Art — Midtown, at the Woodruff Arts Center
Distance

Inside the Perimeter, or outside it

Metro Atlanta is one of the most spread-out large metros in the country, and the I-285 beltway creates a genuine social divide that people talk about openly. Somebody in Alpharetta and somebody in Decatur can both say they live in Atlanta and be in altogether different dating markets.

MARTA rail covers a small core in Fulton and DeKalb counties, so most of the metro needs a car and cross-town drives of forty-five minutes to an hour and a quarter are routine. One upside worth mentioning: because so many people here moved from somewhere else, a lot of them have no inherited church or family network locally. Making the first move is far more normal than it might be back home.

Also within reach

  • Decatur — 15 to 20 minutes east, reachable on MARTA
  • Sandy Springs and Dunwoody — 20 to 30 minutes north, just outside the Perimeter
  • Marietta — 30 to 40 minutes northwest in Cobb County
  • Alpharetta — 35 to 50 minutes north in north Fulton
  • Lawrenceville and Duluth — 40 to 55 minutes northeast in Gwinnett
  • Athens — about an hour and a quarter east, a university town
