Four hundred years of changing its mind about church
Boston was founded in 1630 by Puritan Congregationalists, and both the Congregational tradition and the later Unitarian split took shape in and around the city. Then the nineteenth century turned it upside down: the Diocese of Boston was established in 1808, Irish famine migration transformed a formerly Protestant city into a Catholic-majority one, and Boston had elected its first Catholic mayor before the century was out.
Italian immigration built Catholic communities in the North End and East Boston, and since the 1980s Latin American migration has reshaped them again — Central Americans and Salvadorans are now the largest immigrant group in East Boston. The metro carries an unusually dense cluster of theological institutions: Boston College, Boston University School of Theology, Harvard Divinity School, and Gordon-Conwell and Gordon College to the north. Christian Science was founded here and its world headquarters is still in the Back Bay.

Short distances, slow journeys
Greater Boston is compact by American standards. The inner core of Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline is genuinely walkable and well linked by the MBTA, so dating without a car is entirely realistic inside Route 128. Beyond it, driving takes over and traffic is heavy.
The catch is that trips here are short in distance but slow in practice, and the Charles River and the harbour cut the core into pieces. Most people end up dating along their own transit line without ever quite deciding to. One genuine advantage of a city this full of universities and hospitals: a great many adults here arrived recently for study or work and have no local church or family network yet, so making the first move is entirely normal.
