Chicago is a Catholic city at heart. Roughly three in ten adults across the metro are Catholic, and the Archdiocese of Chicago counts something like two million of them. That parish life was built by Irish, Polish, Italian and Lithuanian families, and is now shaped just as much by Mexican and other Latino communities. Alongside it, the Great Migration produced one of the most influential historically Black Protestant traditions in American Christianity, rooted on the South and West Sides.
Evangelical institutions are unusually strong here for a big city — Moody Bible Institute sits downtown and Wheaton College is out in the western suburbs. Hyde Park holds a rare cluster of theological schools within a few blocks of each other, Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian and university-based, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is headquartered in the city. There is also a deep Orthodox and Eastern Christian presence, Greek, Serbian, Ukrainian and Assyrian among others.
From spring through autumn the lakefront does most of the work for you: miles of continuous public shoreline with a trail running along it, and no reason for either of you to spend money before you know whether you like each other. In February you will want somewhere indoors and warm, and Chicago is generous about that too.
This is the one Midwest metro where dating without a car is genuinely normal. Two of the CTA lines run around the clock, and eleven Metra lines reach the city and most of the established suburbs. If you both live near a station, distance matters far less than it looks on a map.
Suburb to suburb is a different story and almost always means driving. And the North Side, the South Side and the far western suburbs function as separate pools in practice — a trip from a north-suburban town down to the South Side can comfortably pass an hour each way. Worth a moment's thought before you widen your search radius.
