Christian dating in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is not one city so much as dozens of small ones with a freeway in between. The trick to meeting someone here is picking your side of town and your time of day.

Faith in the city

A church city, in more languages than you would expect

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is the largest Catholic jurisdiction in the United States, and it celebrates Mass every week in more than thirty languages. That one fact tells you most of what you need to know about faith here. It is enormous, and it is not one thing.

Korean Christian worship in Los Angeles goes back to 1906, and Koreatown has been a centre of Korean Protestant church life for decades. Glendale anchors the largest Armenian community in the country, most of it Armenian Apostolic. Evangelical life has deep institutional roots too, with Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Biola out in La Mirada and Azusa Pacific to the east. Whichever tradition shaped you, Los Angeles has a version of it somewhere.

Meeting up

Where a first meeting actually works

The weather does you a favour here. Outdoors is realistic most of the year, which makes a low-key first meeting easy to arrange and easy to leave. Pick somewhere on your half of the map, though. Nobody enjoys a first date that began with ninety minutes on the 405.

Easy places to say hello

  • Griffith Park — vast free city park with trails and the observatory above
  • Grand Central Market — downtown food hall, open since 1917
  • The Getty Center — hilltop museum and gardens in Brentwood, free admission, paid parking
  • The Huntington — botanical gardens and galleries in San Marino, ticketed
  • Palisades Park — ocean-bluff walking path above the beach in Santa Monica
Distance

Distance in Los Angeles is measured in traffic

Twenty miles can take half an hour or an hour and a half, depending entirely on when you set off. There is no single centre that everybody orbits, so nearby means something different here. A match ten miles away over the hill can be harder to reach than one twenty miles down the same freeway.

Rail is slowly changing that. The A Line now runs all the way out to Pomona, and it is the longest light rail line in the world. But most people still drive, and most people still date within their own half of the basin. It is worth being honest with yourself about how far you would actually go on a Tuesday evening.

Also within reach

  • Pasadena — 25 to 45 minutes northeast of downtown
  • Glendale — 10 to 25 minutes north
  • Burbank — 15 to 30 minutes north, at the edge of the Valley
  • Santa Monica — 30 to 60 minutes west to the coast
  • Long Beach — 30 to 55 minutes south, with its own downtown
  • Orange County — 35 to 70 minutes southeast toward Anaheim and Irvine
