Faith in the state

Few places in America are this comfortable talking about church

Oklahoma is one of the most Protestant states in the country. Statewide, around seven in ten adults identify as Christian, and evangelical Protestants make up close to half of all adults — far above the national picture. The Oklahoma Historical Society notes that residents identify as Southern Baptist roughly seven times more often than Americans generally. Churches of Christ, Methodist, Pentecostal and Holiness traditions are all substantially more common here than elsewhere too.

Those are statewide figures rather than city ones, and Oklahoma City is more urban and more mixed than the state as a whole, so treat them as the backdrop rather than the local reading. Catholic presence arrived largely through immigration and through religious orders running hospitals and schools. Oklahoma City University has been affiliated with the United Methodist Church since 1904, and Oklahoma Christian University was founded in 1950 by members of the Churches of Christ. Christianity among Oklahoma's Native American communities is a long-established strand in its own right.

Meeting up

Where a first meeting actually works

Downtown has been quietly rebuilt over three decades through MAPS, a penny sales tax that voters keep renewing. Scissortail Park is the most visible result — seventy acres and a lake, opened in two phases in 2019 and 2022, free and open from six in the morning until eleven at night.

Easy places to say hello

  • Scissortail Park — 70 free downtown acres with a 3.7-acre lake
  • Myriad Botanical Gardens — 15 downtown acres, outdoor grounds free
  • Boathouse District — riverside trails and rowing on the Oklahoma River
  • Paseo Arts District — Spanish-revival streets with studios and galleries
  • Plaza District — walkable strip of galleries, shops and food
Distance

A very big city with a very manageable metro

The city limits cover something like 606 square miles, putting Oklahoma City among the largest in the country by area — but the whole metro holds only about 1.4 million people across seven counties. The result is space rather than congestion, and drives that would be an ordeal in Dallas or Houston are simply a drive here.

Edmond to the north and Norman to the south are the two other anchors, each roughly fifteen to twenty miles from downtown, and either is a perfectly realistic regular trip. The flip side is that two people can both say they live in Oklahoma City and be at opposite ends of a six-hundred-square-mile area, so it is worth naming your part of town.

Also within reach

  • Edmond — about 15 miles north, a university town with its own downtown
  • Norman — about 20 miles south, home to the University of Oklahoma
  • Moore — directly south, between the city and Norman
  • Midwest City — eastern suburb, a short drive from downtown
  • Yukon — west of the city along I-40
  • Shawnee — about 40 miles east along I-40
